Radar detection of unidentified flying objects is considered uncommon for the phenomenon. This is why, in the rare cases this happens, it usually causes a commotion. However, such wasn’t the case during one of Michigan’s biggest mysteries.

Michigan is no stranger to UFO sightings, but the 1994 Michigan UFO event ranks among the top when it comes to ambiguity. Hundreds of witnesses, including police officers, radar operators, and, allegedly, even the FAA, yet none could identify what appeared that night.

To this day, there are more questions than answers about the 1994 Lake Michigan UFO incident. Let’s unpack what happened.

What Was the 1994 Michigan UFO Event About?

On the night of March 8, 1994, three separate offices received an influx of calls. The Ottawa County Dispatch, MUFON’s Michigan chapter, and News Channel 3 all received reports of strange lights above Lake Michigan. This lasted for over 15 minutes and amassed more than 300 witnesses across 42 of Michigan’s 83 counties.

• Over 100 of which were received by MUFON.
• Over 50 of which were directed to News Channel 3.

With this number of witnesses, the “1994 Michigan UFO Event” quickly broke out to the mainstream. While it might not have had as many direct witnesses as the thousands recorded during the Hudson Valley and Belgian UFO waves, this didn’t make it any less intriguing.

What made this event even more distinct was that a fraction of the reports, made through 911 calls, and a radar operator’s insights were recorded and published.

What Happened on March 8, 1994?

To verify the authenticity of the calls, the Ottawa County Dispatch:

• Sent a Holland officer, Jeff Velthouse, to investigate
• Cooperated with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Muskegon for radar data

Jeff Velthouse’s Report

Jeff Velthouse arrived at Country Club Road, where some of the residents were calling from.

He met Mr. Darrell Graves in his front yard, binoculars in hand. Graves shared that he was alerted by his children, who had seen the strange objects that “met together and separated.”

The man pointed to an object in the sky, which prompted Velthouse to look through the binoculars. There, he “noticed that there were red, green, and white lights on it,” but the shape wasn’t clear. In an official police report, Velthouse would later write:

The lighting on the object appeared to be different than a normal aircraft, and the lighting appeared to be oscillating, rather than blinking. I saw two objects. However, they were quite far apart and were heading in a southwest direction.

The NWS Radar Data

Jack Bushong, then a meteorologist at the NWS, answered the call from the dispatch center. He reported seeing only “nothing more than the usual ground clutter,” before taking manual control of the radar to get a closer range. This was when he saw the object.

Here’s the transcript of his conversation with the dispatch center:

NWS/Jack Bushong: I’m looking at it in the vertical now, and I’m not really—Wait a minute, there’s something right there. Okay, let’s see what that is. That looks like it’s up about maybe 6,000 ft.

NWS/Jack Bushong: [It] could have been a plane, but it was pretty big… Yeah, there’s something big down there… That’s really strange… It’s moving towards west-southwest, and it looks like a big blob.

NWS/Jack Bushong: It’s gone up… I’m getting it now at about 12,000 ft. This is weird… It’s a pretty strong return… I’ve never seen—Now I’m getting multiple returns.

Jack Bushong described seeing multiple radar echoes forming a triangle over Michigan. These reportedly changed positions as they moved around the area, making them difficult to track.

He said that one of the objects moved about 20 miles before the others followed; this continued until they reached southern Lake Michigan.

By that time, Bushong was certain that something was indeed in the skies that night, given how it appeared on the radar data.

NWS/Jack Bushong: They’re very strong returns. They’re spiky. So, it’s something pretty solid, not a precipitation or anything.

The meteorologist was also certain that whatever was reflected on the radar wasn’t a normal aircraft. He explained, “planes show as pinpoints on the scope. These were the size of half a thumbnail.”

Where Did the Lake Michigan UFO Sightings Take Place?

General reports traced the 1994 Michigan UFO event sightings in Ottawa, Muskegon, and Allegan. Most of the published 911 calls were also from residents on Country Club Road and Ottogan St., areas in Holland City.

The objects were seen hovering above these areas for minutes before, as Jack Bushong reported, moving 20 miles due south. When the dispatch center called Bushong, the meteorologist found that the objects had moved significantly away from their initial positions.

NWS/Jack Bushong: I’m seeing three. They look like a triangle on my scope. I’m looking at one around down near South Haven. I’m seeing another one over Lake Michigan about northwest Benton Harbor, and another one over west or east of Benton Harbor, which should be near Decatur. I’m seeing three of those. They’re very strong, and I’m getting another one down in Berrien County. These are huge returns. I’ve never seen anything like this.

Dispatch Center: The officer (Jeff Velthouse) says it’s green and red lights. It does not look like an airplane. They come together, and then they separate, and they just keep doing this.

The dispatch officer’s response is interesting. Remember, Jess Velthouse was investigating on Country Club Road during this conversation. If we track the distance from where he was and the points mentioned by Bushong of where the object had been, then:

From Country Club Road:

• Allegan was 29 miles away
• South Haven was 33 miles away

These were the closest areas to Velthouse’s location. So, how was he still observing the object? Does this mean the Lake Michigan UFO was enormous for multiple witnesses to see it, or were there numerous UFOs flocking the area?

What Did Witnesses Experience During the Lake Michigan UFO?

The most compelling sources for this UFO incident’s narrative were the 911 callers recorded. However, as the case grew, more witnesses also came forward, including:

Air Traffic Control Corroborations

Aside from these residents, the 1994 Michigan UFO sightings were also corroborated by air traffic controllers.

After the conversation with the dispatch center, Jack Bushong also reached out to the FAA control tower in Muskegon to check whether they had seen anything. An air traffic controller responded, claiming he observed three aircraft in formation but didn’t have a transponder.

Over at News Channel 3, while their phone lines were also ringing, logistics manager Missy Broderick phoned the control tower at Battle Creek International Airport. An air traffic controller also confirmed that they saw “a couple of abnormal returns” on their radar.

How Was the 1994 Michigan UFO Event Investigated?

Investigations into this UFO case were limited to the verification of witness statements. Researchers examined how the residents’ narratives aligned with one another and whether they coincided with the radar data timeline.

MUFON Investigation

Virginia Tilly, a now-retired MUFON investigator, learned about the 1994 Michigan UFO event when a friend from Flint called her. Later, she would be put in charge of investigating it.

Her process included interviewing at least 20 witnesses to the incident. She also placed the Graves family, who collectively saw the UFO, in separate rooms and asked them to draw what they observed, then see if their drawings aligned.

After her investigation, MUFON was able to rule out earthly explanations:

• Marsh gas
• Small plane
• Advertising blimp
• Weather balloon
• Military aircraft
• Space debris

Jack Bushong

The NWS didn’t want to tarnish its reputation and become the “UFO reporting center,” so they allegedly tried to conceal the incident. The office claimed that the radar echo wasn’t related to a possible UFO sighting, and instead:

• They suggested that the radar return was the metallic foil on a military aircraft.
• They theorized that the radar return was due to a temperature inversion.

Although he wasn’t able to personally see the lights on radar, Bushong became curious about the incident. So much so that years after his retirement, he returned to Michigan to investigate.

His process was similar to Virginia Tilly’s. He also interviewed some witnesses to see whether their narratives matched the radar data he had gathered. He also met with Tilly to help examine the case.

What Is the Significance of the 1994 Michigan UFO Event in Modern Ufology?

The available data on the 1994 Michigan UFO event suggest a very strong case for its extraterrestrial origin. The sheer volume and the quality of its witnesses are almost impossible to ignore. Not to mention the spread of where the involved individuals resided—it’s simply impossible for that many people to misidentify an aircraft.

The radar operator’s confirmation that the objects were far larger than the conventional planes also provides an excellent argument for debunkers and skeptics.

There may not be definitive proof that the objects were truly extraterrestrial. But this case remains a contender for one of the most widespread sightings, with credible witnesses and verifiable evidence.
