While starting his Air Force career, Salas failed to complete his pilot training due to personal matters. So, instead, his first assignment was as an aircraft controller at Tyndall Air Force Base. However, this was only a short stint because in the middle of 1965, he decided to apply for duty in Vietnam, where he was assigned to missile duty.

In 1969, he was reassigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, supporting the propulsion engineering section of the Titan III Special Program Office (SPO). By 1971, Salas would end his seven years of service in the Air Force, with a rich background, particularly in missile propulsion:

• Launch officer for intercontinental ballistic missiles

After returning to Colorado with his family, Salas went to work at Martin Marietta, busying himself with space shuttle proposals under the company’s Reliability and Safety department. A year later, he did the same work at Rockwell International. And by 1974, Robert Salas had begun his 21-year tenure at the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1995.

How Did He Become Involved With UFOs?

Salas’s entry into ufology is tied to a popular UFO incident in Malmstrom Air Force Base, where an unidentified craft allegedly deactivated nuclear weapons.

The Malmstrom UFO Incident

On the morning of March 16, 1967, Robert Salas was on duty with his commander, Fred Meiwald, at Oscar Flight, as part of the 490th Strategic Missile Squadron with four other flights. They were in an underground capsule monitoring missile launches when he received a call from one of their flight security controllers on the surface.

The man claimed that he and the other guards had been observing a strange light circling the site, noting its unusual, noiseless maneuvers. Salas responded with a question, supposedly as a joke, but which might’ve best described the scenario:

You mean like UFOs?

Initially, Salas took the call lightly. He disregarded the security controller’s description and told him to call if anything else happened, which is exactly what the man did. Half an hour later, the controller called again, this time, very frightened.

In his interview with Dr. Steven Greer, Robert Salas recalled what the man told him:

There’s a glowing red object hovering right outside the front gate. I’m looking at it right now. I’ve got all men out here with their weapons drawn.

The UFO-Nuke Interference and Government Secrecy

Robert Salas immediately reported the call to Meiwald. Just as he was relaying the information, the panels alerted that their missiles were shutting down one by one. As he recalled, seven or eight of their 10 missiles were immediately on NO-GO status within seconds.

Meiwald also reported the incident to the command post, and they were informed that Echo Flight also experienced the same situation. UFOs were hovering at the launch facility, but the difference was that all 10 of their missiles went off.

The next day, they were called to the squadron commander’s office. There, they met with an Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) member, who asked them for their incident logs. They were also asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement stating that they couldn’t discuss the incident with anyone, not even among themselves.

The incident was investigated, but in the midst of it, the Air Force allegedly stopped the process. In fact, in his correspondence with Bob Kaminski, the head of the investigative team at that time, Kaminsky wrote to him:

We were notified a few days later that a stop-work order was on the way from OOMA to stop any further effort on this project. We were also told that we were not to submit the final engineering report.

This incident was what sparked Robert Salas’s interest in UFO conversations. It’s also what gave him the beliefs that he has been advocating for to this day, that:

• UFOs can interfere with nuclear weapons.
• The government was hiding something from the public.

Did He Have Other UFO Encounters?

Apparently, what fueled Salas’s fervor in speaking about the authenticity of UFO encounters isn’t only the Malmstrom incident. He shared that after four to five sessions of hypnotic regression, he learned that he had a close encounter of the third kind.

His story happened one night in 1985, when he was in Manhattan Beach, California, with his family. He and his wife were woken by a strong, bluish light in their living room. At first, they thought it was a burglary, but after seeing what caused it, the situation became clear.

Salas recalled that he became paralyzed by the sight of these hooded figures, whom he thought were children “because they were small in nature.”

Without touching him, they proceeded to move him off the bed and floated him through the locked bedroom window. Then, these events followed, which Salas believed happened on board these figures’ spaceship:

• He woke up with a long needle held in front of his eyes.
• Long, bony fingers held him down, while someone telepathically told him that they were going to insert the needle in his groin area.
• He was then escorted by two “grays with large heads” as he floated to another cubicle.
• Another individual checked his spine, or his “nervous system,” as he described, and once that was done, he was sent back to his bed.

Robert Salas was convinced this was a true memory for the reason that the pain he felt as they inserted the needle was so severe that it couldn’t have been a dream.

After his close UFO encounters, Robert Salas became a prominent figure in UFO discussions. He had been a regular attendee at numerous congressional hearings on the UFO phenomenon.

After the Malmstrom incident, Salas claimed that within six months, 30 missiles were disabled—all of which occurred during UFO encounters. These weren’t happening only in the U.S. but have been reported across Russia, Chile, Japan, France, and Ukraine.

For him, these weren’t attacks but a message. 

While the Department of Defence (DoD) might’ve suggested that these incidents were threats to national security, Salas argued that no missiles were destroyed. In fact, nothing was destroyed in the process, when, if they wanted to, they could’ve easily blown things up. Instead, to him:

The real danger is us—our own nuclear stockpile, our false sense of security.

Robert Salas believes that all the UFOs wanted was to warn humanity against a possible catastrophe. They’re trying to give a message about “the stupidity of having nuclear weapons that could annihilate every living thing on the planet.”

Greater Transparency around UFO Data

Like most UFO researchers, Salas also believes that the government knows more about UFOs than it’s telling the public. He speculates about a well-funded “international cabal embedded in intelligence agencies” working to prevent information from reaching the public.

That, regardless of whether the recent Schumer UAP Bill, which mandates the declassification of UFO records, gets passed, this group will still bury information. Robert Salas believes that “it would take a presidential decree or intervention” to get to these agencies.
