For most UFO researchers and enthusiasts, the most disappointing aspect of sightings isn’t the absence of evidence—it’s how neglectful some investigators are.

Photographs aren’t subjected to thorough scrutiny. Samples of vegetation are never collected. It’s as if these cases are never actually given proper consideration.

Fortunately, UFO researchers in France take matters into their own hands, and earnestly, at that. In fact, their counterpart to NASA, the Centre national d’études spatiales (CNES, Centre for Space Research), has a special team that swings into action when such events are reported—a team that played an integral role in the Trans-en-Provence case.

What Is the Trans-en-Provence Case?

The Trans-en-Provence case remains one of the most scientifically examined UFO cases in France. It’s among those incidents where scientists had their hands on proof skeptics say doesn’t exist—scientific evidence showing beyond doubt that something had occurred.

While a single-witness case, the Trans-en-Provence case wasn’t easily dismissed. Instead, the authorities gave full credence to the witness’s story and had gone through the trouble of understanding what he had experienced.

Who Was the Key Witness?

The sole witness, Renato Nicolaï, had lived in Trans-en-Provence for nearly 14 years and hadn’t experienced any incidents similar to the case.

He was a 52-year-old mason who claimed he had no prior knowledge of UFOs before his encounter. While he had heard of the term in passing, he never really knew or bothered to learn what the letters stood for. But that would change on January 8, 1981.

For two years leading up to the event, Nicolaï hadn’t been employed and had spent most of his time tending to his property to keep himself busy. In fact, he had been working on the upper-level terrace portion of his land when the “device,” as he initially called it, passed.

What Happened During the Trans-en-Provence Case?

It was about 5 PM. My attention was attracted by a slight noise, a sort of faint whistling. I turned around and saw a device in the air at the height of a big pine tree at the edge of the property. This device, which was not spinning, was coming lower toward the ground.

Nicolaï abandoned what he was doing to follow what had appeared. As the device was coming down, he crept closer to it, hiding behind a cabin nearby to observe it closely.

He recounted that it merely rested on the ground for a couple of seconds before lifting off, emitting a subtle whistling sound. When it had floated to a point above the trees, it left at high speed toward where it came from. He described the device as:

  • Shaped like two saucers, one inverted on top of the other
  • 1.5 in height
  • The same color as lead
  • Had a ridge around its circumference

When the device lifted off, I saw four openings below, through which neither flame nor smoke was escaping.

Throughout the event, the mason reported that he hadn’t thought the device was anything extraterrestrial. His first impression of it was, “It’s probably a military device.”2 This might also explain why he wasn’t hesitant in approaching it.

Nicolaï shared what had happened to his wife when she came home an hour later. She initially didn’t believe him, but when they returned to the site the next morning and saw marks on the ground, she quickly informed their neighbors, who advised her to call the gendarmerie.

Who Were the Key Players in Investigating the Trans-en-Provence Case?

By January 9, 1981, the gendarmerie was alerted to the event and responded quickly. They sent an officer to the site, who, after talking to the witness:

  • Checked for physical traces
  • Took photos of the area
  • Collected soil samples

After an initial investigation, a rough deduction was released. It indicated that the plants around the site were affected, with abnormally low chlorophyll levels. Additional findings revealed:

  • The estimated soil temperature was 572 to 1,112°F.
  • The circles discovered in the field were 7.2 to 7.9 ft in diameter.

Soil samples were also sent to CNES’s Groupe d’Études des Phénomènes Aérospatiaux Non-identifiés (GEIPAN), while the other vegetal samples were sent to INRA for further analyses.

Dr. Bounias, the Biochemistry Laboratory Director, later elaborated:

We found considerable differences between concentrations of certain photosynthetic pigments, such as chlorophyll and carotenoids, and those of other biochemical substances similar to sugars, such as glucose or amino acids. These differences show that there was a sort of biochemical trauma [in the area].

The laboratory also analyzed and compared vegetal samples and found that the young leaves at the landing site showed signs of abnormal aging.

Unfortunately, aside from acknowledging these effects, the director didn’t provide a concrete explanation of the alleged phenomenon.

Groupe d’Études des Phénomènes Aérospatiaux Non-identifiés (GEIPAN)

The group was first notified of the Trans-en-Provence case on January 12 and immediately asked to obtain similar samples collected on site. However, its official investigation only began on February 17, 1981, focusing on:

  • Gathering additional soil and vegetal samples
  • Examining the witness’s statement
  • Reconstructing the phenomenon

Their Reconstruction of the Event

During the interview with Renato Nicolaï, GEIPAN highlighted key details of the phenomenon to ensure a complete understanding of the Trans-en-Provence Case.

  • Trajectory. The witness stated that the motion was fast and continuous. It happened without changes in speed, with both departure and arrival trajectories in similar paths.
  • Duration. The phenomenon was described as brief. According to the witness’s statement, the estimated duration was only 30 to 40 seconds.
  • Distance. The witness was in a good position, which gave him a clear view of the entire event. GEIPAN estimated that Nicolaï was no more than 70 m away from the object.
  • Shape. The witness gave a consistent description of the object. He emphasized that its side had a thick, flat ridge that circled it. When it took off, he described seeing four smaller circles arranged perpendicularly.
  • Dimensions. The witness estimated that the object was about 2.5 m in diameter and 1.7 to 1.8 m in height.
  • Color. The witness described the device as gray, resembling zinc, with the four pods beneath appearing darker.
  • Sound. The witness emphasized that it was the sound that caught his attention, likening it to strong wind.

Their Soil Analyses

GEIPAN conducted three sampling procedures over the area:

  • January 9. They took four samples:
    • (a) the soil sample taken by the gendarmerie
    • (b) small quantities of surface oil
    • (c) a soil sample below the crust
    • (d) an alfalfa sample.
  • January 23. They requested the gendarmerie to take new vegetal samples 20 m away from the phenomenon’s immediate vicinity.
  • February 17. They took eight new vegetal samples, one of which was from three to four meters outside the immediate vicinity.

They examined these samples using several methods and found the following results.

Visual and Microscope Analysis
Procedure Visual examination using a binocular enlarging lens to determine the samples’ physical and chemical compositions.
Results
  • The original soil sample was divided into two, labeled 1A and 1B
  • The soil was compacted dirt with a 6- to 7-mm-thick crust composed of dry limestone with few traces of desiccation and moss.
  • It showed pronounced curved striations on the surface and some abrasion, indicating it had been subjected to rubbing.
  • It had been fractured, possibly under mechanical and thermal action.
  • 1A and 1B exhibited similar compression effects and striations, but 1B showed a darker area that could have been a foreign material.
Physico-Chemical Analysis
Procedure Examination conducted by the SNEAP laboratory to identify mineral or organic elements in: (1) the darker area on 1B, and (2) the striations on 1B.
Results
  • The sample contained no organic compounds found in hydrocarbon combustion engines.
  • The sample had a layer of iron over limestone, but it lacked chromium and nickel, which are commonly found in steel.
Electronic Diffraction Studies
Procedure Parts of the samples were dissolved in water, desiccated by ultrasound dispersion, and analyzed by electron diffraction.
Results The sample obtained on February 17 contained three compounds, one of which was monocrystalline and was not present in the original sample.
Control Study: Mass Spectrometry by Ion Bombardment
Procedure Samples from the contact area and from far away were tested.
Results
  • The darker/black particles in the soil were a combustion residue.
  • The sample from the contact area contained zinc and phosphate deposits.

GEIPAN’s analyses showed that the area where the phenomenon happened had undergone thermal and mechanical changes. This indicates that strong mechanical pressure or shock was exerted on the ground’s surface, resulting in a modification of its structure.

National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP)

The analyses conducted by GEIPAN were examined by NICAP, which led them to conclude that:

  • The Trans-en-Provence craft dissipated considerable kinetic energy without affecting the crust beneath the surface.
  • The ground temperature reached 600°C at departure, which might have been due to the object’s impact.

What Is the Trans-en-Provence Case’s Significance in Ufology?

The Trans-en-Provence case is widely regarded as one of the most scientifically compelling UFO encounters in France, thanks to substantial evidence, including differences in soil composition and vegetation damage. 

With this wealth of data, the Trans-en-Provence case established a standard for UFO investigations, enhancing not only its own credibility but also the entire field of ufology.
